Happy belated 11th birthday to our sweet Eleanor! So hard to believe you are 11 now!!! She's modeling this year's Halloween costume. The main part of the dress is made from Simplicity 1557, which is actually a Merida dress, but I just used the main part for what we wanted. The sleeves are from Simplicity 5520. I would have used that pattern for the entire dress, but it only goes up to size 8. Simplicity 1557 is the only pattern of this style that goes up to size 14. A lot of them go to size 8 and then start with adult sizes. While Eleanor can wear some adult sizes, the one pattern I purchased was just wrong in so many ways, so this was a much better "fit" for her. I cut a size 12 based on her measurements, but I think a 10 would have been a better fit. It's not all bad in that because it's big, she can easily wear warm clothes under the dress for trick-or-treating.

The dress is a black costume satin from JoAnns-very slippery and hard to sew! The overlay and sleeves are made from a drapey tulle like fabric from the Halloween section of JoAnns. Eleanor picked it out herself. I made two dresses, put the spiderweb one on top of the black one and then treated as one dress when adding the zipper, neck facing and the sleeves. We attached cloth-like spiderweb to the neckline from the dollar store. The hat is one we already had, but I need to get a bigger one as this is meant for a smaller child. On the hat is the cutest owl we purchased at the dollar store. Finally we made a belt from cording from the drapery section at JoAnns and added a spider belt buckle that I made from a spider we purchased from a costume store and glued a tough twisty tie inside to attach to the knot of the belt. I'm tempted to find some little spiders and glue them in the center of all the webs. I don't think I have the time and patience to do that, but I think it would really add something!

On a fairworthy scale from 1 to 10 meaning 1=absolutely unfairworthy and 10=totally fairworthy I would rate this dress a 7. The invisible zipper gave me a bit of trouble so it's not as smooth as it could be a the base of the zipper-there's a pucker, but the overlay fabric is difficult to rip out without ripping, so I tacked it down the best I could. The hem is a bit wonky in the back, but since I may re-hem this dress for fair to cut off what is sure to be dirty, I'm not too worried at the moment.

Next on the docket-Tinkerbell and Princess Leia.

Mickihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15915688928925109798noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36668627.post-48245976738967783202013-07-26T09:55:00.000-05:002013-07-26T09:55:06.457-05:00Fair? What fair??Once again, the fair has snuck up on me and I have been very bad about posting what I have been making, etc. It's so easy to pop a picture up on Facebook and leave it at that. Entries are going well and there are only 2 short weeks until they are all due. The baby hat count is obscene-I'll just leave it at that. I think I have the most entries this year (not including the baby hats) that I have ever made and that is exciting. I'm also the co-chairperson of Hand Embroidery this year and that is very exciting! I think after this year, I will make a more concerted effort to get back into the blogging mode and actually chronicle my creating for the fair. So for now, I will just leave you with this pictureless post and go work on those last few entries waiting to be finished.Mickihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15915688928925109798noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36668627.post-3374951763827299032013-05-11T07:00:00.000-05:002013-07-16T04:17:06.919-05:00Happy Birthday Claire!

In our family it's become a tradition to take our children on a special trip when they turn 10. Ben went to NYC with Trent and I took Macy to visit the Mall of America a couple of years ago. You can read about it here. After much thought, Eleanor decided to go to Disneyland. We actually were going to go to Disney World, but getting any tickets with airline points was not an option. As it was, we had to do some fancy footwork to get enough points to go on this trip. It worked, tickets were purchased (you have to pay a small fee, but $20.00 for two, round trip, tickets to California is not too shabby!) and we just had to wait!

After waking up at 4:00 am, we were at the airport before we knew it! So far no mishaps, except we found out that a deer hit Trent on his way home. We are happy to report he is okay and we only had to replace a side view mirror-whew!
We had a quick layover in Chicago. While we were there, we took some time to walk around and visit some of the sites that Macy and I enjoyed in the airport during our trip.
We spent a lovely day and evening with Cindy and grandma and by 6:00 that night, with the time change and all, we were beat. We were both asleep by 7:00. This was also the weekend to fall back and so we ended up waking up at 3:30 am unable to go back to sleep. It was going to be a long day!

That morning we said goodbye to Grandma and went to church the next morning with some friends. Afterwards they took us out for a yummy lunch and then dropped us off at our hotel. They quickly got us checked in and we were on our way to the parks!

Our first stop was Radiator Springs! If you haven't been to Disney California, you have to go just so you can say you visited this. I'm hoping they are planning on building one just like it at Disney World in the next few years. Cars is one of our favorite Disney movies, so we really enjoyed this area!

A fun trip on the swings!

It was soon time for Disney's California Adventures to close and so we went over to Disneyland. It was very crowded. Little did we know that earlier that day, the Backstreet Boys were filming a Christmas special and so the park was packed. It didn't help that is was a Sunday and a beautiful day. If you see the special, the band was wearing heavy coats to make it look like it was cold out, but it was actually close to 90 degrees that day.

Our first stop was the Pirates of the Caribbean since that ride was down when we went to the Magic Kingdom a few summers ago. We waited in line and got in a boat and moved up and then stopped and waited and waited and waited some more. Pretty soon they were making announcements that the ride would be moving shortly, except it never did. They finally had to turn on the lights and evacuate the ride. We went through a side entrance by one of the fake houses along the water. They gave us a free "pass" to be used in the fast pass lane of another ride.

So we went over to the Haunted Mansion and waited and waited and I realized the line was not moving at all. It was also broken down, but they weren't telling anyone that. We tried to leave and they had us kind of locked in, but we were finally able to go out. We worked our way through the crowds to the Thunder Mountain Railroad-finally success! It was dark and fast, but a lot of fun. Then we were somewhat lost as it was very dark and it had been over 15 years since I had been to Disneyland. We finally made it over to Fantasyland and were all excited to go on It's a Small World, but it was closed (they were decorating for Christmas). It was now almost over 2 hours since we had gotten in the park and we had only successfully ridden on one ride! We made our way to Tomorrowland and used our free pass on Star Tours.

The only problem was the Fast Pass line was anything but fast. Once again we found ourselves in a line to a ride that was having technical difficulties. We stayed since our pass was now gone and it was only good for Sunday and it was getting late and we were ready to head back to the hotel anyway.

Finally we got to the 3-D glasses! It still took a while after this point to board, but we finally made it on the ride. They've redone the ride since we rode it at Disney World and it was great!
We rode Buzz Lightyear on our way out of the park and made our way back to our hotel. We were tired (it was 2 am our time!) and Eleanor fell asleep before her head even hit the pillow.
The next morning we were off to visit Disneyland first thing. We had been awake since 4:30 California time thanks to the fact we were not used to the time change. We had a lot of waiting around to do!

We did a little window shopping in Downtown Disney. Don't these treats look fabulous?

We began our day with more waiting. It was hot, but at least this time we remembered to bring books to read while we waited.

On our way down Main Street USA to Space Mountain, except after all the waiting and waiting and waiting some more we discovered the ride was down-all day. :(

So we rode on Autotopia after waiting and waiting and waiting. Getting to the park early was not turning out to be very advantageous as almost every ride we visited was down or running at minimal capacity.

Finally! The Matterhorn was up and running. A very fun ride, although I don't remember it hurting so much to ride it when I was younger.
Things were finally starting to move along at faster than a snail's pace and the rides were finally up and running, so Eleanor was checking her plans and seeing what was next.
We headed back over to Disney's California to enjoy a few more things over there before going back to the hotel. This Ferris Wheel was fun, but don't go on it if you are afraid of heights. What you can't see is that some of the cars do not stay in one place like on a regular Ferris Wheel-they move along a track. We did not go on those-they were too scary!!!

Day number three and we were excited to visit Disneyland an <strike>hour</strike> half hour early. Our Early Morning Magic Hour was really only about 30 minutes long because they were filming a movie and weren't ready for regular people to come into the park.
In fact we weren't even allowed to walk down Main Street. They made us walk behind the scenes where all the garbage and pipes, etc. was located. One funny guy commented, "I'm so glad I payed $75.00 to see this!"
The movie they were filming is Saving Mr. Banks and it's about Walt Disney and his filming of Mary Poppins. If you look closely at this picture, everyone is wearing clothes from the 60's. They were taking a break when I took this picture.
Here they are getting ready to film some more. We kept getting in trouble because we were actually interested in what they were doing. Even though we stayed quiet (lots of signs telling everyone to stay quiet), stayed behind the ropes (lots and lots of ropes) and did not take any flash photography (again lots of signs!), they did not want us to watch what was going on. We were expected to just keep walking and pretend they weren't there. So they kept telling us to move on and so we decided to go over to Disney California where we found out that Tom Hanks was at Disneyland (he's playing Walt Disney in the film) and maybe that's why everyone was a bit less pleasant than usual. A few days later after we came home, I did some searching on the internet about the movie and discovered some people actually able to get some shots of filming/Tom Hanks-I'm amazed that they were successful!
The "You Be the Judge" contest this year for our fair is baby hats that will be donated to local hospitals. This contest is one of my favorite contests. Besides trying to win for most votes, I usually try to win for most items made. This year I have challenged everyone to make at least one hat a day for a whole year. So far I'm on schedule to do just that. I'm sewing most of them, but since I can't take my sewing with me in the car, etc., I'm crocheting and knitting some as well. So far I've been on a crochet kick. Here are some of the beauties I have made:
Both of these patterns can be found at http://www.repeatcrafterme.com/. I absolutely love her patterns and they are so easy! Although the Mickey hats are very cute, I think the owl hats have been my favorite to make so far. I can't wait to make her owl granny squares!
This year Claire wanted to be the opposite of what she was last year. Do the pictures above give you a clue?

How about this?

It's Mother Gothel in all her glory! We couldn't find a curly black wig that wasn't outrageously expensive, so this $8.00 one from Target will have to do. I used McCall's 5499 to make Claire's dress. I squared the neckline and combined the straight sleeves with the bell sleeve part to make a single flaired sleeve. I bought the material at Joann's in their clearance rack-it was drapery fabric marked down to $3.00/yard. Woo Hoo!

I love the back of this dress. The pattern doesn't call for a zipper, but there was no way I was lacing Claire into this thing every time she wanted to wear it. So I added a zipper and then sewed one side of the back closure part to the dress and added velcro to the other side. Now it's very easy to get in and out of!
Here she is, next to Kate who is modeling the Rapunzel dress I made for Claire last year. What a difference! Up next is a Minnie Mouse dress for Kate!
I've never had much luck using my machine getting the insert in straight, so I have to do that by hand. It takes a while.

A lot to do this week. I have a list. I need to get realistic about what can and can't be completed and remember there is always next year.Mickihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15915688928925109798noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36668627.post-51222388676088340842012-08-02T22:43:00.001-05:002012-08-02T22:43:24.765-05:007 days and countingOne week to go! Today I made 13 bullion roses on the bishop baby dress. I actually had to redo several of the roses and they are still just okay, but I just had to stop and call it good. So I didn't complete the dress, but I did one of the things I hate and now it's done. Hoping to get the sleeves done on both bishop dresses and get them hemmed. I have to go to JoAnn's tomorrow to get more plastic snaps since I've used up all I had on hand.

I finished crocheting a handle for a purse for an 18" doll. Just need to sew the end of the handle to the purse and that will be done.

Tomorrow I go to JoAnn's to get fabric for the princess dresses for Claire's American Girl Doll and to get a button for the felted purse. I still need to cut out Eleanor's prairie girl costume, but I need to get a smaller pattern for the bonnet as the one that came with the size of her dress is way too big. It's wonderful that a good sale on patterns and the fabric I need will start tomorrow with an additional 25% off coupon. I'll take it!

Claire baked her cupcakes today and they are waiting in the freezer to be frosted on Friday (entry day) and Kate made her cookie dough which we froze into balls to be bake on Friday as well.

Not sure how much I will get done next week as it's going to be pretty busy and I have Ben and Eleanor using my machine to complete some of their projects. I definitely will be working at night.Mickihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15915688928925109798noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36668627.post-63895103288247831892012-08-01T21:29:00.000-05:002012-08-01T21:29:28.114-05:008 days and countingNo pictures today, but I did get a bit accomplished. I sewed the side and back seams of a baby dress I smocked and added the neck binding. I'm not happy with it, but I'm leaving it as is. I love to smock, but the construction always gets me. I have a hard time getting the dress blocked appropriately at every stage. I guess if I made more, I would get better (like making pie crusts). I need to sew on snaps, hem the dress and finish the bullion roses. I hope to do all that tomorrow. We'll see. I was going to work on it tonight, but I'm beat. I have an 18" doll dress that is done except for snaps and a hem. Oh, I forgot sleeve bindings. Need to do those on both dresses. Yeah, not going to finish those tomorrow after all I'm thinking.

Need to get frames for some penguin cross-stich that Trent and I made. More plastic snaps at JoAnns and some fabric, but will probably wait until Friday for that as there's a sale and a good coupon on the sale stuff. I'm hoping to make 6 or 7 Disney princess dresses for an 18" doll for Claire for Christmas, but I want to finish them so I can enter them in the fair. Otherwise they might not be in good enough shape to enter next year.Mickihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15915688928925109798noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36668627.post-42345531703631111762012-07-31T19:22:00.000-05:002012-07-31T19:22:12.881-05:009 days and counting

Nine days? Really? Yikes! Well I did get two things accomplished today and I hope to work on some more stuff tonight if I can stay awake. I finished the above dress for the same friend who I made the stuffed penguin and baby hat for. This is all the penguin stuff I'm doing for the fair, except for a cross-stitch, but I'm keeping that after the fair. I'm so pleased with how this dress turned out. I used Simplicity 5695, view D, but I lengthened it, left off the bottom ruffle and added a fake waistband in which I threaded elastic in to give it some more shape. I saw a similar style of dress on youcanmakethis.com. I embroidered the penguin using my sewing machine. I love it!

I also crocheted a flower for my felted bag and then felted the flower in the wash. I'm pleased with how it turned out. Now I need to attach it to the bag and maybe add a button to the center of it or something. Pictures when I'm done.

I have a lot to complete and a few things I haven't even cut out yet, but hey there's still 9 days and counting. Plenty of time. ;)

Mickihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15915688928925109798noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36668627.post-44931980719307851892012-07-29T18:35:00.000-05:002012-07-29T18:35:52.781-05:0011 days and countingI'm off to crochet a rose for my felted bag which turned out very nice. This time I crocheted the handles so maybe the judges will like that better. I'm also crocheting a different flower than the one I made last year. The yarn for the purse and flower are the same as I had it leftover from last year and wanted to use it up.

My friend Elaine's husband commented that the reason why I was able to enter 11 different categories is because I don't watch TV. That's true! I don't really watch TV at all. We don't have cable and ever since they switched from analog signals to digital we rarely can get a regular station anyway. I will admit though, that I do watch a few things on the internet if I need to stay up late to finish something up as it helps keep me awake. I will admit that my friend Elaine is a very fast knitter/crocheter and she could get a lot more of those items done with less mistakes than I ever could! Also, I usually enter a lot more items in the clothing division and less in everything else, but this year I tried to work on adding some new categories and as a result, I may only have 3-4 items to enter in that category and nothing that will really be show stoppers for a big purple ribbon, but I'm okay with that.

Three of my children are off to camp this week and the other two have their mornings filled with activities, so I hope to accomplish a lot this week or at the very least complete a couple of my projects on my list!Mickihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15915688928925109798noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36668627.post-63201845934673126632012-07-27T21:57:00.001-05:002012-07-27T21:57:06.092-05:0013 days and countingNo picture today, but things continue to be worked on or completed. I felted a bag and just need to add something for a decoration. I'm thinking a felted flower. I saw a neat crocheted rose that is different from the one I made last year. Eleanor has started working on a dress, but will have to finish it the week entries are due as she didn't work on it today and tomorrow we'll be working at the fair to help with set up. Then she's off to camp for the week.

This will be Kate's first year to enter something. She's making cookies. We'll make the dough next week and freeze it so we can just pop it in the oven the day entries are due and be done with it. I wish we could do that with Claire's baked good, but she wants to do brownies and I don't think that will work. They might freeze well after baking . . .hmmm. Something to think about. Maybe you are shocked that I would suggest baking something now and freezing it for later? Well don't be. I learned this tip from a Purple ribbon/Pillsbury Bake off winner. I tried it last year and everything I made in advance and then froze won better ribbons than anything I made fresh.

I've started cutting out the rest of the tops for my stockings for "You be the judge". I was playing around with some embroidery for Ben's stocking that he wants to make, but my sample didn't work. Turns out I had the wrong thread in the bobbin. I will get the right kind tomorrow. I'm thinking we may just use iron on's instead to get the look he wants. As long as he sews it together is the biggest part. It's going to be cute.

I was hoping the kids would be more done (terrible grammar I think) at this point so I would not be stressed out, but no-I will not be so lucky.

If I counted correctly, I will have entered something in 11 different categories in the Home Arts Building alone this year. They are as follows: Crochet, Knitting, Clothing, Animals, Toys, & Dolls, Felting, Smocking, Accessories, Baking, Candy, Hand Embroidery and Needlework on Canvas. I bought a drop spindle while on our vacation this year and hope to learn how to use it this year so I can spin some wool and make something from it and enter that in the spinning next year! In most of these categories I will only enter one item, but in a few, I will enter 2 or more. If all goes well I will enter three items in smocking this year-a first for me! I also have several stockings in various stages of completion. I doubt enough to win most made, but enough to make me feel like I'm giving a good contribution. I won't say how many yet as I've only completed a handful. The rest are in various stages of completion.

I will enter a picture or two in photography and a tie dye shirt but those are in another building.

Okay, time for me to go to bed, so I have energy to finish up everything in the next couple of weeks!Mickihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15915688928925109798noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36668627.post-65772374028157857012012-07-25T07:21:00.002-05:002012-07-25T07:21:45.432-05:0016 days and counting

We just returned home from a long family vacation which involved lots of driving. I made this baby hat the last day of our trip. Well actually I would have made it the second to the last day, but I messed up halfway through and the only way to salvage it was to start over. I made it with the left over yarn from the Penguin's hat.

I'll post a few of the other items I worked on during the trip over the next few days.Mickihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15915688928925109798noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36668627.post-89612865620110697772012-07-22T19:47:00.001-05:002012-07-22T19:49:03.523-05:00And the fair countdown begins!

Yes, the fair is only 17 days away, but believe or not I've been pretty busy these past few weeks. Starting tomorrow (or the next day) I hope to start posting every day giving updates on things I'm working on or finishing up. I can't promise pictures every time, but I'm using my friend Elaine as my inspiration to finally get something posted on this blog!

The penguin above I made for my friend Judy. She is getting a new grandbaby (her first!) and wanted a penguin something. I'm actually making three things for her grandbaby, but this is the first thing I finished. I have a hat on some needles right now. About 1/2 way done on that one. Using the same yarn as I made the hat and scarf for the penguin above. Rumor has it that penguins are taking over the Home Arts building this year. I have to do my part to contribute to the madness!Mickihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15915688928925109798noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36668627.post-74084730184316915162012-05-11T09:40:00.001-05:002012-05-11T09:40:36.170-05:00Happy Birthday Claire!!

Happy Birthday to my sweet girl Claire! Hard to believe it was 7 years ago that you came into our lives!!

On a side note, sorry for the lack of posts other than to wish my children a happy birthday, although I have to admit, they are the most fairworthy things I have ever created!!!
She's one of the best Valentine's anyone could ask for! She had a birthday party for the first time this year and really enjoyed it. She wanted to invite everyone she knew from school, Mother's Day Out and bible class, but alas we did not have the room to house all those children and being February, the weather did not allow for an outdoor party. She had a fine time despite the small number of children.Mickihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15915688928925109798noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36668627.post-66456344809267995192012-01-27T09:50:00.000-05:002012-05-11T09:52:20.718-05:00Happy Birthday Ben!!

I finally have a teenager! That is why the picture above is when Ben was a baby, because we can rarely get a current one of him. So proud of how well you've done in school and so glad you are a part of our family. :)Mickihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15915688928925109798noreply@blogger.com0
